It took the nearly 40 days and 40 nights to find a head coach last offseason. The period was marked with a downpour of denials from head coaches and a flood of unhappiness from the locker room. There's no sun on the other side of this story's arc, though. The ensuing season was a complete offensive drought. Al Davis' 38-day search concluded with longtime friend Art Shell, who -- with the help of Tom Walsh -- constructed the NFL's worst offense. This offseason, Oakland is looking at an almost identical scenario. The Vikings Brett Favre jersey
team is coming off a miserable, losing season and searching for an offensive-minded head coach to turn the franchise in the opposite direction. In the past four seasons, Oakland has looked to three different coaches to right the ship -- Bill Callahan, Norv Turner and Shell. Each of the three came from offensive backgrounds, all having prior experience at either O-line coach or coordinator before accepting the position in Oakland.Much to the dismay of the 77-year-old Davis, in that four-season span the Raiders also posted an NFL-worst 15-49 record. This year, the team shouldn't have to travel very far to find its next team leader.Rob Ryan, who originally joined the staff under Turner, has been with the Raiders since 2004. The 19-year coaching veteran has watched his defense improve each year, enjoying several upgrades in personnel along the way. Since 2001, the team has spent seven of its eight first-round draft choices on defensive players, with offensive tackle Robert Gallery being the sole exception. As a result, Ryan has been able to mold his defense from scratch. In 2006, his third year at the helm, Oakland's defense finished third in the NFL in total yardage allowed, with just under 285 yards per game.Promoting the young coordinator would also endorse continuity within the organization -- something Oakland has lacked for a long while. In the post-Jon Gruden era, the longest stretch endured by a Raiders head coach has been two years. Callahan led the way from 2002-2003; Turner took charge in the subsequent two seasons; and Shell was replaced after just 16 games. Most importantly, Ryan has overwhelming support from those who matter the most -- the players."I've been with Rob for three years now. He's a really emotional guy," fourth-year linebacker Sam Williams said. "He gets the guys up to play. He'd be a really good leader for the whole team, and he'd still be running the defense his way."The 42-year-old coordinator, however, is still without a set interview date, but is expected to be the only in-house option that Davis will weigh, despite previous reports that offensive coordinator John Shoop was the frontrunner for the position."Three years, three head coaches," Pro 4 Brett Favre White jersey
Bowl defensive end Derrick Burgess commented on Friday."That's something that's a first for me."Burgess' next head coach may look a bit more familiar, though. Odd, but familiar.Want to be in the Raiders mailbag? Visit RaidersLive.com to submit your questions and comments for the Jan. 19 mailbag. (53)
