"A Season in Reflection" Commentary

A long, unspeakable year is behind us.The capped off their 2006 season the same way they began it -- with an offensive dud. Oakland fell to the playoff-bound New York Jets 23-3 in a game that saw Aaron Brooks and Co. turn the ball over three times and generate just over 200 yards ofVikings Brett Favre jersey
total offense along the way. With the season now over, here's a list of the remaining Raider-oriented thoughts fluttering through my head...Jerry Porter was right.Aaron Brooks is not the problem. Aaron Brooks is not the solution. The 30-year-old veteran finished the season 0-8 as a starter, with three touchdowns and eight interceptions. Don't expect him to be back.Tight end James Adkisson made it the entire year with a roster spot, but was inactive for 12 games. Adkisson finished the year with one catch for nine yards - .5626 receiving yards for each week he was on the roster.Oakland scores an offensive touchdown once every 79 plays. When 25-year-old wideout Johnnie Morant touches the ball, there is a 28.57 percent chance he will fumble, historically speaking. The team's Week 17 roster included five tight ends. Only in Oakland will that happen.A 21-3 collapse in Week 3 marked the low point in the Raiders' season. Cleveland Browns quarterback Charlie Frye threw three unanswered touchdown passes in the second and third quarters to send Oakland to its third loss. Although Andrew Walter and the offense were shut out in the second half, the team's 21-point mark was the second-highest total it tallied all year, sadly.A 20-13 win at Pittsburgh marked the high point in the season. Defensive backs Nnamdi Asomugha and Chris Carr totaled 124 return yards off interceptions, good for 12 of the team's 20 points in the late-October win.Six-year veteran safety Derrick Gibson is still on the team. When I come up with an explanation as to why, I'll let you know.Stuart Schweigert is not a bad tackler -- really. The 25-year-old finished the season with 107 tackles, leading all free safeties in the NFL. In a predominantly rushing division, Schweigert was forced to make more open field tackles on LaDainian Tomlinson and Larry Johnson than any other player in the NFL. If that stat was actually recorded, I'm sure his name would be at the top -- if not, he's just an ankle-tackle away.Nnamdi Asomugha is the best cover corner in the NFL outside of Denver's Champ Bailey. Warren Sapp, who finished the year with a remarkable 10 sacks for a defensive tackle, hasn't been this effective in six years. The 300-pound lineman also chipped in with 47 tackles -- a number he hasn't matched since 2002, when he was with Tampa Bay.Say what you want about Alvis Whitted, but he led the all offensive players in tackles with six.I won the 2010 pro bowl 4 Brett Favre Blue jersey
Fantasy League, beating fellow columnist Connor Byrne in the championship. In the league-deciding game (which occurred in Week 16 of the regular season), Oakland's defense was given the nod. The unit earned me 10 points. I won by one point.Former first-round draft choice Tyler Brayton hasn't recorded a sack in 429 days. Since that sack, which occurred back on Oct. 30, 2005, Brayton has appeared in 25 games and started 14.Jerry Porter's one grab for 19 yards places him at the top of the Raiders' list for yards per catch.Kirk Morrison will be elected to his first Pro Bowl next season, along with Asomugha. Courtney Anderson (6-foot-6, 270 pounds) is the perfect football player, until he gets on the football field. That felt good.Visit RaidersLive.com now to join the Jan. 12 Raiders mailbag. (30)
